Entertainment centers eased into the furniture scene with the advent of the VCR and the need for space near the television to store the VCR player. Television stands work for the basic TV but once we added to the media set up, shelves became necessary. Since we were adding shelves for the VCR and then gaming systems, why not build something large enough for movies, games, books, photos and other decorations? It made sense and entertainment centers became integral parts of family rooms and living rooms.

Now, with the flat screen TV and large screen systems, entertainment centers have taken on a new look. One nice change is that they no longer have to sit a foot from the wall to allow for the back of the television—flat screens affected the aesthetics considerably. Wide use of DVD and Blue ray players, gaming systems and additional media features keep entertainment centers constantly adjusting to keep up with the demands.
